# Army Bases in Georgia: Every Post, the Name Changes, and 2026 BAH

There are four Army bases in Georgia that most families will ever get orders to: Fort Benning, Fort Stewart, Hunter Army Airfield and Fort Gordon. Two of those names may not match your paperwork, because both posts were renamed in 2023 and renamed again in 2025.

This guide covers every Army installation in the state, what each one does, the name changes, and what housing costs nearby. PCS stands for Permanent Change of Station, the military's term for an assigned move.

## Every Army Installation in Georgia, at a Glance

Georgia's Army footprint splits into three regions. Each one is its own housing market.

| Installation | Where it is | What it does |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Fort Benning | Columbus, on the Alabama line | Maneuver Center of Excellence: Infantry and Armor schools |
| Fort Stewart | Hinesville, southwest of Savannah | Home of the 3rd Infantry Division |
| Hunter Army Airfield | Savannah | Aviation and deployment airfield for Fort Stewart |
| Fort Gordon | Augusta | Cyber Center of Excellence and Army Cyber Command |
| Gillem Enclave | Forest Park, south of Atlanta | Former Fort Gillem; Army tenants supported by Fort Gordon |

## What Each Army Base in Georgia Does

### Fort Benning

Fort Benning covers more than 182,000 acres along the Georgia-Alabama line next to Columbus, with about 12,000 of those acres across the Chattahoochee River in Alabama. It supports more than 120,000 active-duty troops, family members, reserve Soldiers, retirees and civilians every day, per the [Fort Benning garrison](https://home.army.mil/benning/about).

Benning is the Army's Maneuver Center of Excellence, where the Infantry and Armor schools train together. It is also home to the 75th Ranger Regiment, the 1st Security Force Assistance Brigade and the Army Marksmanship Unit. Expect a lot of students on short tours, which keeps the rental market busy. Our [Fort Benning PCS guide](/blog/pcs-to-fort-benning-2026-guide) and our list of the [best places to live near Fort Benning](/blog/best-places-to-live-near-fort-benning) cover arrival and neighborhoods.

### Fort Stewart

Fort Stewart, in Hinesville, is the home of the 3rd Infantry Division. Together with Hunter Army Airfield, it covers 288,000 acres and employs more than 25,500 people, including about 21,200 active-duty Soldiers. More than 10,200 people live on post, per the garrison's [command data summary](https://home.army.mil/stewart/about).

The garrison calls Stewart-Hunter the Army's premier power projection platform on the East Coast. In plain terms, it is built to load out a heavy division fast. The training land is huge, with drop zones, tank gunnery ranges and live-fire maneuver areas.

### Hunter Army Airfield

Hunter Army Airfield sits inside the city of Savannah, northeast of Fort Stewart. It is run by the same garrison and hosts the 3rd Combat Aviation Brigade and other 3rd Infantry Division tenants, per the [Hunter Army Airfield garrison page](https://home.army.mil/stewart/about/Garrison/hunter-army-airfield). Its runway is the reason Stewart-Hunter can move heavy equipment on a tight timeline.

Families assigned to Hunter often live in Savannah, Pooler or Richmond Hill rather than Hinesville. See our [Fort Stewart and Hunter Army Airfield PCS guide](/blog/pcs-to-fort-stewart-hunter-aaf-2026-guide).

### Fort Gordon

Fort Gordon covers 56,000 acres outside Augusta. It is home to the U.S. Army Cyber Center of Excellence, which trains the Army's cyber, signal and electronic warfare Soldiers, per the post's [Cyber Center of Excellence history page](https://home.army.mil/gordon/CCOE/history). Army Cyber Command also moved its headquarters here in 2020, per [Army.mil](https://www.army.mil/article/237570/army_cyber_command_ceremony_heralds_its_arrival_at_new_headquarters_at_fort_gordon).

That mix brings a lot of tech jobs and contractors to the Augusta area, which shapes the housing market. Our [Fort Gordon PCS guide](/blog/pcs-to-fort-gordon) and our look at the [best places to live near Fort Gordon](/blog/best-places-to-live-near-ft-gordon-augusta-georgia) go deeper.

### Gillem Enclave

Fort Gillem in Forest Park closed as a full post under the 2005 Base Realignment and Closure round and became an enclave in 2011, with base support provided by Fort Gordon, per [Army.mil](https://www.army.mil/article/67768/fort_gillem_turns_into_enclave_partner_with_fort_gordon). Some Army organizations still work there, but it is not a typical family duty station.

## The Base Names That Changed Twice

Two Georgia posts changed names in 2023 and changed back in 2025.

Fort Benning became Fort Moore in May 2023. On March 3, 2025, the Secretary of Defense signed a memo restoring the name Fort Benning. The new namesake is Cpl. Fred G. Benning, a World War I Soldier who earned the Distinguished Service Cross in France in 1918, per [Army.mil](https://www.army.mil/article/283521/hegseth_restores_fort_moore_to_fort_benning_in_honor_of_wwi_soldier).

Fort Gordon became Fort Eisenhower in 2023. On June 10, 2025, the Army announced it would [change the names of seven installations](https://www.army.mil/article/286223/army_to_change_names_of_seven_installations), including Fort Gordon. The post now honors Master Sgt. Gary I. Gordon, who received the Medal of Honor for the 1993 battle in Mogadishu, Somalia.

So the correct names today are Fort Benning and Fort Gordon. You may still see Fort Moore or Fort Eisenhower on older orders, websites and map apps. Same gates, same ZIP codes.

## What Housing Costs Near Georgia's Army Posts

BAH is Basic Allowance for Housing, the monthly amount the military pays you toward housing when you live off post. It is set by pay grade, dependent status and your duty station's rate area, not by the rent you actually pay.

Here are 2026 monthly rates for three common pay grades, with dependents first and without second, from the official [DTMO BAH rate lookup](https://www.travel.dod.mil/Allowances/Basic-Allowance-for-Housing/BAH-Rate-Lookup/) run by the Defense Travel Management Office.

| Installation | Rate area | E-5 | E-7 | O-3 |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Fort Benning | Fort Benning, GA (GA075) | $1,716 / $1,482 | $2,004 / $1,635 | $2,058 / $1,878 |
| Fort Stewart | Fort Stewart, GA (GA080) | $2,310 / $1,947 | $2,493 / $2,178 | $2,598 / $2,385 |
| Hunter Army Airfield | Savannah, GA (GA077) | $2,415 / $1,968 | $2,685 / $2,241 | $2,745 / $2,562 |
| Fort Gordon | Fort Gordon, GA (GA073) | $1,890 / $1,644 | $2,190 / $1,809 | $2,250 / $2,058 |

![Bar chart comparing 2026 Basic Allowance for Housing with dependents at Fort Benning, Fort Stewart, Hunter Army Airfield and Fort Gordon for E-5, E-7 and O-3 pay grades](/images/blog/army-bases-in-georgia/georgia-army-bah-2026.png)

*2026 Basic Allowance for Housing, with dependents, by Georgia Army rate area. Source: DoD DTMO BAH rate lookup.*

Two things stand out. First, Savannah pays the most. An E-5 with dependents at Hunter draws $699 a month more than the same Soldier at Fort Benning. That gap reflects Savannah's higher rents, not extra money in your pocket.

Second, Fort Stewart and Hunter are in different rate areas even though they share a garrison. Your rate follows the ZIP code of your duty location, so check which one your orders name.

Rates reset every January. Look up your own pay grade and ZIP code rather than relying on a friend's number. Our explainer on [2026 BAH rates](/blog/2026-bah-rates-what-changed-and-how-to-check-yours) shows how.

If you want a local read on what that allowance buys near your gate, [talk with a Georgia agent who works with military families](https://www.veteranpcs.com/contact-agent?form=agent&fn=Jodi&id=001Rg000007IHsn&state=georgia). There is no cost and no obligation.

## Georgia Is Three Army Housing Markets

**Columbus and Phenix City.** Fort Benning families shop on both sides of the state line. Columbus, Midland and Fortson are common Georgia picks, while Phenix City and Smiths Station put you in Alabama. Check which state's taxes and schools apply before you sign.

**Coastal Georgia.** Fort Stewart families often look in Hinesville, Richmond Hill and Midway. Hunter families lean toward Savannah, Pooler and Rincon. This is hurricane country, so price flood insurance and confirm the flood zone on any home before you make an offer.

**Augusta and the CSRA.** Around Fort Gordon, Grovetown, Evans, Martinez and Hephzibah are the usual picks, plus North Augusta and Aiken across the river in South Carolina.

If you plan to buy, a VA loan is a home loan backed by the Department of Veterans Affairs that usually needs no down payment. See our guide to [how much house you can afford on BAH](/blog/how-much-house-can-you-afford-on-bah) before you set a budget. Georgia also offers property tax relief to some disabled veterans; our [Georgia veteran property tax exemption guide](/blog/georgia-veteran-property-tax-exemptions-2026) explains who qualifies.
