# Living Near Fort Benning: A Local Guide to Columbus and Phenix City

Living near Fort Benning means living in two states at once. The post sits on the Chattahoochee River in west-central Georgia, at the southern edge of Columbus and across the water from Phenix City, Alabama. Columbus is about 100 miles southwest of Atlanta, according to [Military OneSource](https://installations.militaryonesource.mil/in-depth-overview/fort-benning). This guide is for families who already have orders and want to know what daily life is like: which side of the river fits you, how the time zone works, what to check on schools and housing, and where locals like to eat and explore.

The local picks in this guide come from Haley Howlett, an Army spouse and VeteranPCS agent in the Columbus area. Haley's personal favorites are marked as her picks. The installation, school, housing, and time zone facts are VeteranPCS research, with sources linked so you can check them yourself. If you want the full move checklist first (BAH, healthcare, and commute times by town), start with our [PCS to Fort Benning 2026 guide](/blog/pcs-to-fort-benning-2026-guide). This post picks up where that one leaves off.

## Fort Benning, Fort Moore, and the "Tri-Community"

You may still see the post called Fort Moore on older paperwork, maps, and websites. It carried that name from 2023 until March 2025, when the Army restored the name Fort Benning. The current name honors Corporal Fred G. Benning, a World War I soldier who earned the Distinguished Service Cross, according to the [U.S. Army](https://www.army.mil/article/283521). Same post, same gates, same mission. Locals often call the area the "Tri-Community." [Military OneSource](https://installations.militaryonesource.mil/in-depth-overview/fort-benning) defines it as Columbus, Fort Benning, and Phenix City, Alabama. In practice, families shop, eat, and go to church on both sides of the river, so it helps to think of the whole Chattahoochee Valley as home.

Haley's take: she loves the location because the mountains and the Florida beaches are each a few hours away by car. That makes Fort Benning a good fit for families who like weekend road trips.

## Living Near Fort Benning: Georgia Side or Alabama Side?

One of the biggest choices you will make is which side of the river to live on. Here is how the common areas compare.

| Area | State | What families often like |
|---|---|---|
| On post (Villages of Benning) | Georgia | Shortest commute, on-post DoDEA schools for younger kids |
| Uptown and historic Columbus | Georgia | Walkable downtown, restaurants, RiverWalk, events |
| North Columbus | Georgia | Established neighborhoods, shopping, medical care |
| Midland | Georgia | Suburban feel with shopping nearby |
| Harris County (Fortson, Ellerslie, Hamilton) | Georgia | More space and a quieter, rural setting |
| Phenix City | Alabama | Right across the river from Columbus |
| Fort Mitchell | Alabama | Close to the post on the Alabama side |
| Smiths Station | Alabama | Residential, small-town feel |

Commutes depend on your unit, your gate, and the time of day, since Fort Benning is a large post. Drive the route at rush hour before you sign a lease or make an offer. Our guide to the [best places to live near Fort Benning](/blog/best-places-to-live-near-fort-benning) goes deeper on individual towns.

On cost, [Military OneSource](https://installations.militaryonesource.mil/in-depth-overview/fort-benning) lists Columbus at 9% below the national average for cost of living. Your housing pay comes from BAH, the Basic Allowance for Housing, which depends on your rank, dependent status, and duty station. Look up your exact rate with the [DoD BAH Rate Lookup](https://www.travel.dod.mil/Allowances/Basic-Allowance-for-Housing/BAH-Rate-Lookup/), then compare it to the full monthly cost of a home: rent or mortgage, utilities, insurance, property taxes, and gas for the commute. Taxes and insurance can differ between the Georgia and Alabama sides, so compare real numbers for each address.

## The Time Zone Quirk Every Newcomer Should Know

Georgia is on Eastern Time. Alabama is officially on Central Time. But Phenix City and the communities around it, including Smiths Station, have long kept Eastern Time by local custom so they match Columbus, according to a [Citizen of East Alabama column on the Uniform Time Act](https://www.citizenofeastalabama.com/opinion/uniform-time-act-still-causes-confusion/article_234a2a8a-d8d7-11ef-95f7-afddacb7ea3d.html). For everyday errands between Columbus and Phenix City, your clock does not change.

There are two exceptions worth knowing:

- That same column notes that Smiths Station schools, which belong to the Lee County school system, keep Central Time. Confirm bell times with the school before the first day.
- Head farther west to Auburn or Opelika and you are on Central Time, one hour behind Columbus. Plan dinner reservations and game times with that in mind.

## Schools Near Fort Benning: Check the Exact Address

School assignments depend on your exact address, and boundaries can be very specific. Always confirm the assigned school with the district before you sign a lease or buy a home. [GreatSchools](https://www.greatschools.org/) is one place to compare school information, but the district has the final word on zoning.

Districts that serve the Fort Benning area include:

- Muscogee County School District, which serves Columbus and much of Midland
- Harris County School District, which serves Harris County, including some addresses with a Midland or Fortson mailing address
- Phenix City Schools and Russell County Schools on the Alabama side, depending on the address
- Lee County Schools, which serves parts of Lee County, Alabama, including Smiths Station

On post, the Department of Defense Education Activity (DoDEA) runs Stowers, E.A. White, McBride, and Dexter elementary schools and Faith Middle School, according to the [Fort Benning garrison schools page](https://home.army.mil/benning/unitstenants/tenants/dod-schools-fort-moore). These schools serve military children from prekindergarten through eighth grade. Parents must show active duty status and proof of on-post residency to enroll. High school students, and all students who live off post, attend the local county schools.

## Living on Post: The Villages of Benning

On-post family housing is managed by the Villages of Benning. According to [Military OneSource](https://installations.militaryonesource.mil/military-installation/fort-benning/housing/housing), service members on PCS orders with at least one family member living with them can apply. A few rules matter for your timeline:

- Your wait list spot is based on rank, family size, and the date you left your last duty station.
- If you apply more than 30 days after you arrive, you get a later date for the wait list.
- Applications missing required paperwork go on administrative hold and cannot receive a housing offer until the paperwork is complete.

If living on post matters to your family, contact the housing office early and ask about current wait times for your rank and family size. Many families apply on post and start an off-post search at the same time, so they have a backup.
