# PCS to Fort Benning: A 2026 Guide for Military Families

If you have orders for a PCS to Fort Benning, welcome to the Chattahoochee Valley. PCS stands for Permanent Change of Station, the military term for moving from one duty station to another. Fort Benning sits next to Columbus, Georgia, and it is a large, busy training post with a long history and a strong community. You may have seen this post called Fort Moore. It carried that name from 2023 to 2025, and on March 3, 2025 the Army restored the name Fort Benning. The current name honors Corporal Fred G. Benning, a World War I soldier who earned the Distinguished Service Cross for heroism near Exermont, France in October 1918, not the Confederate general the post was first named for, according to the [U.S. Army](https://www.army.mil/article/283521).

A move is a lot to manage at once. Our goal is to make the Fort Benning part feel clearer. We will cover where to live, how housing pay works, schools, healthcare, the climate, and a few things to do once you are settled.

## What and Where Is Fort Benning?

Fort Benning sits in west-central Georgia, right next to the city of Columbus. The post spreads across Muscogee and Chattahoochee counties in Georgia, plus a portion of Russell County, Alabama, just across the Chattahoochee River from Phenix City.

According to the [U.S. Army](https://www.army.mil/article/283521), Fort Benning is home to the United States Army Maneuver Center of Excellence, known as the MCoE, along with the U.S. Army Infantry School, the U.S. Army Armor School, and elements of the 75th Ranger Regiment. The post also hosts Officer Candidate School, the Western Hemisphere Institute for Security Cooperation, and the Army's Airborne and Ranger training. In plain terms, this is where the Army trains much of its infantry and armor force, so it is a busy post with a deep military community around it.

## Where to Live When PCSing to Fort Benning

Some families who move to Fort Benning live in on-post housing, while others settle in Columbus or a nearby community in Georgia or across the river in Alabama. On-post housing may have wait lists, so ask your sponsor and the housing office early. For off-post living, your choice usually comes down to commute, schools, and budget.

*Approximate one-way drive times to Fort Benning. Times vary with traffic and which gate you use.*

### Columbus, Georgia

Columbus wraps around much of the post and is the closest place for most families, with commutes that can be under 15 minutes depending on your gate. It is Georgia's second-largest city, with the widest range of homes, rentals, shopping, and services in the area. Many families start here for the short drive.

### Phenix City, Alabama

Phenix City sits across the Chattahoochee River from Columbus, often about 10 to 15 minutes from a gate. It puts you in Alabama, with its own tax rules and school districts, while keeping you close to the post. Families often look here for value and a quick commute.

### Fort Mitchell, Alabama

Fort Mitchell lies just south of Phenix City in Russell County, Alabama, roughly 15 minutes from the post. It is more rural and quiet, with some newer neighborhoods and a bit more land for the money. It suits families who want space without a long drive.

### Midland, Georgia

Midland sits northeast of the post in the Columbus area, about 20 minutes from the gate. It offers a suburban feel with established neighborhoods and easy access to shopping, a middle ground between city and country.

### Fortson and Cataula, Georgia

Fortson and Cataula are in Harris County, north of Columbus, roughly 25 minutes from the post. They offer a more rural setting with larger lots and the Harris County schools that many families seek out.

### Smiths Station, Alabama

Smiths Station sits east of Phenix City in Lee County, Alabama, about 25 minutes from the post. It has a small-town feel with newer subdivisions and more home for the money.

### Hamilton and Pine Mountain, Georgia

Hamilton and Pine Mountain are farther north in Harris County, around 35 minutes from the post. They sit near the foothills and state parks, with a quiet, small-town pace, and work best for families who do not mind a longer commute.

## Fort Benning BAH and the Cost of Living

If you live off post, the military helps cover your housing through BAH, which stands for Basic Allowance for Housing. BAH is a monthly, tax-free payment. The amount depends on your rank, whether you have dependents, and your duty station's Military Housing Area, or MHA. An MHA is the geographic zone the Defense Department uses to set local housing pay. Fort Benning falls within the Columbus, Georgia Military Housing Area.

Because rates change each year and vary by rank and dependent status, we do not publish a rate table here. To find your exact figure, use the official DoD calculator: [travel.dod.mil BAH Rate Lookup](https://www.travel.dod.mil/Allowances/Basic-Allowance-for-Housing/BAH-Rate-Lookup/). Enter your rank and ZIP code to see the current rate. Exact BAH rates are verified separately, so always confirm yours before signing a lease or making an offer.

The Columbus area is a more affordable housing market than many duty stations, which is good news for families on a budget. The typical home value in Columbus, Georgia was about $152,000 in June 2026, according to [Zillow](https://www.zillow.com/home-values/17539/columbus-ga/). That is a typical value, not a median sale price. As of the week of June 18, 2026, [Freddie Mac](https://www.freddiemac.com/pmms) reported the average 30-year fixed mortgage rate at 6.47 percent. Whether buying or renting makes more sense depends on how long you expect to be stationed here.

## Schools Near Fort Benning

The schools your children attend depend on where you live, and several districts serve the Fort Benning area on both sides of the river.

Families who live on the post send younger children to the [Fort Benning Schools](https://www.dodea.edu/americas/southeast/fort-benning-schools), run by the Department of Defense Education Activity, or DoDEA. These schools serve military-connected students from prekindergarten through grade 8 and include Stowers, Dexter, White, and McBride elementary schools and Faith Middle School. As the DoDEA page notes, high school students who live on post, and all students who live off post, attend the local civilian districts.

Those districts include the Muscogee County School District in Columbus, the Harris County School District to the north, and Chattahoochee County schools. Across the river in Alabama, families fall under Russell County Schools or Phenix City Schools, depending on the address. Boundaries can shift, so confirm the assigned school for any specific address before you commit.

## Healthcare: Martin Army Community Hospital

On-post medical care for the Fort Benning community is centered at [Martin Army Community Hospital](https://martin.tricare.mil/), which provides primary care, specialty care, and a range of services for eligible patients. You can review what is offered on its [Health Services](https://martin.tricare.mil/Health-Services/) page. For care the hospital does not provide, you may be referred to providers in the larger Columbus area.

Your military health coverage runs through TRICARE, the military health program. Set up your TRICARE plan early in your PCS. Update your information in DEERS, choose or transfer your plan, and request any referrals through the hospital's [Appointments and Referrals](https://martin.tricare.mil/Getting-Care/Appointments-Referrals/) page before you arrive so there is no gap in care. DEERS stands for the Defense Enrollment Eligibility Reporting System, the database that confirms who is eligible for military benefits. Getting this squared away early reduces stress after you land.

## Climate and Things to Do

The Columbus area has a humid subtropical climate, with hot, humid summers, mild winters, and pleasant springs and falls. The [National Weather Service office in Peachtree City, Georgia](https://www.weather.gov/ffc/), which serves the Columbus area, issues the local forecasts and keeps the area's climate records. Keep an eye on its updates for summer heat and the occasional severe storm.

The area offers plenty to do close to home. The [National Infantry Museum](https://history.army.mil/Army-Museum-Enterprise/Find-an-Army-Museum/The-National-Infantry-Museum-Soldier-Center/) in Columbus, part of the Army Museum Enterprise, tells the story of the Army infantry from the Revolution to today. Downtown, the Chattahoochee RiverWalk follows the river for miles, with a long stretch of urban whitewater rafting on the Chattahoochee. A short drive north, [F. D. Roosevelt State Park](https://gastateparks.org/FDRoosevelt) is Georgia's largest state park, with miles of trails through pine and hardwood forest, and [Providence Canyon State Park](https://gastateparks.org/ProvidenceCanyon) to the south is known as Georgia's "Little Grand Canyon." For a family that likes history and the outdoors, this region has a lot to offer.
