# PCS to Fort Huachuca: A 2026 Guide for Military Families

If you have orders for a PCS to Fort Huachuca, welcome to the high desert of southeastern Arizona. PCS stands for Permanent Change of Station, the military term for moving from one duty station to another. Fort Huachuca is a U.S. Army installation at Sierra Vista, in Cochise County, about 15 miles from the Mexican border. It is the home of the U.S. Army Intelligence Center of Excellence, known as USAICoE, the Army's hub for training military intelligence soldiers. This 2026 guide walks you through what to expect when you move here, including where to live, how housing pay works, schools, healthcare, and daily life in the desert.

A move is a lot to manage at once. Our goal is to make the Fort Huachuca part feel clearer. We will cover where to live, how housing pay works, schools, healthcare, the local climate, and a few things to do once you are settled.

## What and Where Is Fort Huachuca?

Fort Huachuca sits at the base of the Huachuca Mountains in southeastern Arizona, with the city of Sierra Vista surrounding its main gate. According to [Fort Huachuca](https://home.army.mil/huachuca/about/history), the post was founded in 1877 as Camp Huachuca to protect settlers and travel in the San Pedro Valley. It became a permanent fort in 1882 and played a long frontier role, including as a base during the Army's final Arizona campaigns. From 1913 onward, the post was home to the 10th Cavalry "Buffalo Soldiers" and later the 25th Infantry Regiment, two of the Army's historic Black regiments. The post's Libby Army Airfield, named for a local Medal of Honor recipient, serves Army aviation and also acts as Sierra Vista's municipal airport.

Today Fort Huachuca is the home of the [U.S. Army Intelligence Center of Excellence (USAICoE)](https://home.army.mil/huachuca/units-tenants/usaicoe), which trains and educates thousands of soldiers and civilians in military intelligence each year. The post also hosts the [Network Enterprise Technology Command (NETCOM)](https://home.army.mil/huachuca/units-tenants/netcom-9th-signal-command), the command responsible for operating and defending the Army's network around the world. In plain terms, this is the Army's center for intelligence and signal work, and it is the largest military installation in Arizona.

## Where to Live When PCSing to Fort Huachuca

Many families who move to Fort Huachuca live in on-post housing, while others settle in Sierra Vista or one of the smaller towns nearby. On-post housing may have wait lists, so ask your sponsor and the housing office about current options early. For off-post living, your choice usually comes down to commute, schools, and budget.

*Approximate one-way drive times to Fort Huachuca. Times vary with traffic and which gate you use.*

### Sierra Vista

Sierra Vista wraps around the main gate and is the closest community, often just a few minutes from post. It is the largest city in the area and offers the most housing, shopping, and services, with neighborhoods that range from older streets to newer subdivisions. Most families who PCS here look at Sierra Vista first for the short commute and the everyday convenience.

### Huachuca City

Huachuca City is a small town just north of Sierra Vista, roughly 15 to 20 minutes from the gate depending on traffic. It tends to be quieter and more affordable than Sierra Vista, with a small-town feel. It is a reasonable choice for families who want a shorter drive and a lower cost.

### Whetstone

Whetstone sits northwest of Sierra Vista along State Route 90, about 20 to 25 minutes from the gate. It is a rural area with more open land and some newer homes. Families who want a little more space and a quiet setting often look here, while keeping the drive manageable.

### Hereford

Hereford lies south of Sierra Vista, near the foot of the Huachuca Mountains, roughly 20 to 30 minutes from the gate. It is rural, with larger lots and mountain views, and it sits close to outdoor spots like Ramsey Canyon. Weigh the longer drive against the quiet and the scenery.

### Benson

Benson is northeast of the post along Interstate 10, about 30 minutes from the gate. It is a small town that serves as a gateway to the wider region, with its own schools and services. Some families pick Benson for lower housing costs and easy highway access, trading a longer commute for the savings.

### Tombstone

Tombstone is the historic Old West town northeast of Sierra Vista, about 18 miles and roughly 30 minutes from the post. It is small and full of character, with a strong tourist draw. A few families choose it for the small-town life and the price, though it is farther from the day-to-day services of Sierra Vista.

### Bisbee

Bisbee is a former mining town in the hills southeast of the post, about 45 minutes away. It is known for its artsy, historic downtown and its hillside streets. The drive is long for a daily commute, so weigh the unique setting against the time on the road and be honest with yourself about that drive.

## Fort Huachuca BAH and the Cost of Living

If you live off post, the military helps cover your housing through BAH, which stands for Basic Allowance for Housing. BAH is a monthly, tax-free payment. The amount depends on three things: your rank, whether you have dependents, and your duty station's Military Housing Area, or MHA. An MHA is the geographic zone the Defense Department uses to set local housing pay. Fort Huachuca falls within the Fort Huachuca, Arizona Military Housing Area.

Because rates change each year and vary by rank and dependent status, we do not publish a rate table here. To find your exact figure, use the official DoD calculator: [travel.dod.mil BAH Rate Lookup](https://www.travel.dod.mil/Allowances/Basic-Allowance-for-Housing/BAH-Rate-Lookup/). Enter your rank and ZIP code to see the current rate. Exact BAH rates are verified separately, so always confirm yours before signing a lease or making an offer.

Compared with much of the country, the Sierra Vista area is an affordable housing market, which is good news for many families. The typical home value in Sierra Vista was about $298,883 in June 2026, according to [Zillow](https://www.zillow.com/home-values/192040/sierra-vista-az/). That is a typical value, not a median sale price. As of the week of June 18, 2026, [Freddie Mac](https://www.freddiemac.com/pmms) reported the average 30-year fixed mortgage rate at 6.47 percent. Whether buying or renting makes more sense depends on how long you expect to be stationed here, so run the numbers for your own situation.

## Schools Near Fort Huachuca

The schools your children attend depend on where you live. Several districts serve the Fort Huachuca area.

Most off-post families in Sierra Vista fall under [Sierra Vista Unified School District](https://www.svusd68.org/), which serves grades pre-K through 12 and includes Buena High School. On post, the [Fort Huachuca Accommodation Schools](https://www.fhasd.org/) run three K-8 campuses: Colonel Johnston Elementary for grades K-2, General Myer Elementary for grades 3-5, and Colonel Smith Middle School for grades 6-8. Families in the outlying towns will look at other districts, including [Tombstone Unified School District](https://www.tombstoneschools.org/) and [Benson Unified School District](https://www.bensonusd.org/).

Boundaries and attendance zones can shift, so confirm the assigned school for any specific address before you commit.

## Healthcare: Raymond W. Bliss Army Health Center

On-post medical care for the Fort Huachuca community runs through [Raymond W. Bliss Army Health Center (RWBAHC)](https://raymond-bliss.tricare.mil/), which provides primary care and other services for eligible patients. You can review what is offered on its [Getting Care](https://raymond-bliss.tricare.mil/Getting-Care) and [Clinics](https://raymond-bliss.tricare.mil/Clinics) pages.

Your military health coverage runs through TRICARE, the military health program. Set up your TRICARE plan early in your PCS. Update your information in DEERS, choose or transfer your plan, and request any referrals before you arrive so there is no gap in care. DEERS stands for the Defense Enrollment Eligibility Reporting System, the database that confirms who is eligible for military benefits. Getting this squared away early is one of the easiest ways to reduce stress after you land.

## Climate and Things to Do

Fort Huachuca sits at about 4,600 feet of elevation, which gives the area a high-desert, semi-arid climate that is milder than much of Arizona. The region has four mild seasons and a summer monsoon, when brief afternoon storms are common from roughly July into September. You can check current conditions and forecasts through the National Weather Service [Tucson office](https://www.weather.gov/twc/tucson), which serves Cochise County. Summers are warm but cooler than the low desert around Phoenix, and winters are mild with occasional light snow at higher spots.

The payoff for the setting is easy access to the outdoors and to a stretch of Arizona's history. [Coronado National Memorial](https://www.nps.gov/coro/index.htm), south of Sierra Vista near the border, marks the route of an early Spanish expedition and offers hiking and scenic overlooks with no entry fee. Near Hereford, [Ramsey Canyon Preserve](https://www.nature.org/en-us/get-involved/how-to-help/places-we-protect/ramsey-canyon-preserve/), run by The Nature Conservancy, is one of the country's premier birding spots, famous for its hummingbirds. To the northeast, [Kartchner Caverns State Park](https://azstateparks.com/kartchner) near Benson offers guided tours of a living limestone cave. And the historic town of Tombstone, a short drive away, brings the Old West to life. For a family that likes the outdoors and a bit of history, this corner of Arizona is hard to beat.
