# PCS to Fort Leonard Wood: A 2026 Guide for Military Families

If you have orders for a PCS to Fort Leonard Wood, welcome to the Ozarks. PCS stands for Permanent Change of Station, the military term for moving from one duty station to another. This 2026 guide walks you through what to expect at Fort Leonard Wood, the U.S. Army post in south-central Missouri that trains many of the Army's engineers, military police, and chemical specialists. We will cover where to live, how housing pay works, schools, healthcare, and daily life in the Missouri Ozarks.

A move is a lot to manage. Our goal is to make the Fort Leonard Wood part feel a little smaller and a lot clearer.

## What and Where Is Fort Leonard Wood?

Fort Leonard Wood sits in southern Pulaski County, in south-central Missouri, between the towns of St. Robert and Waynesville. The post is in the heart of the Ozarks, just off Interstate 44, about 130 miles west of St. Louis and 90 miles east of Springfield. Most visitors reach the main gate by taking I-44 to exit 161, then following Missouri Avenue to the post, according to the post's [directions page](https://home.army.mil/wood/my-fort/imt/directions).

Fort Leonard Wood is the home of the Maneuver Support Center of Excellence, or MSCoE. Its mission is to develop leaders and drive change in Army Engineer, CBRN, Military Police, and Protection capabilities, as the post's [Mission and Vision page](https://home.army.mil/wood/about/mission) explains. CBRN stands for Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear. The post hosts three of the Army's training schools: the [Engineer, CBRN, and Military Police schools](https://home.army.mil/wood/units-tenants). It is also a basic training site, where new soldiers begin in the [43rd Adjutant General Reception Battalion](https://home.army.mil/wood/units-tenants/43ag) and complete a 10-week [Basic Combat Training program](https://home.army.mil/wood/my-fort/imt). In plain terms, this is a busy training installation with a strong, steady military community.

## Where to Live When PCSing to Fort Leonard Wood

Most families who move to Fort Leonard Wood either live in on-post housing or settle in one of the nearby Ozark towns. Your choice usually comes down to commute, schools, and budget.

*Approximate one-way drive times to Fort Leonard Wood. Times vary with traffic and which gate you use.*

### St. Robert

St. Robert sits right outside the main gate, about 10 minutes from the post. It is the most convenient choice, with the shortest commute and most of the area's shopping, restaurants, and services close at hand.

### Waynesville

Waynesville is the county seat, about 15 minutes from the post. It offers a small-town feel, a historic downtown, and the largest local school district. Families often choose it for the mix of short commute and community roots.

### Dixon

Dixon is a small Pulaski County town about 25 minutes from Fort Leonard Wood. It is quieter and more rural, with lower-cost homes and its own school district. The trade-off is a slightly longer drive and fewer services close by.

### Crocker

Crocker, also about 25 minutes out, is another small Ozark town with a country setting. It appeals to families who want space, a slower pace, and a small local school.

### Richland

Richland sits roughly 25 minutes from the post on the southwest side of the area. It is a small town with affordable housing and easy access to I-44. Families who value quiet and lower costs often look here.

### Rolla

Rolla, about 35 minutes east along I-44, is a larger college town home to a state university. It offers more shopping, dining, and a bigger school district than the small towns closer to the post, but the daily commute is longer.

### Lebanon

Lebanon lies about 45 minutes southwest of Fort Leonard Wood along I-44. It is a full-size town with more retail and housing choices. The commute is the longest on this list, so weigh the extra drive against what you gain in town.

## Fort Leonard Wood BAH and the Cost of Living

If you live off post, the military helps cover your housing through BAH, which stands for Basic Allowance for Housing. BAH is a monthly, tax-free payment. The amount depends on three things: your rank, whether you have dependents, and your duty station's Military Housing Area, or MHA. An MHA is the geographic zone the Defense Department uses to set local housing pay. Fort Leonard Wood falls within the Fort Leonard Wood Military Housing Area.

Because rates change each year and vary by rank and dependent status, we do not publish a rate table here. To find your exact figure, use the official DoD calculator: [travel.dod.mil BAH Rate Lookup](https://www.travel.dod.mil/Allowances/Basic-Allowance-for-Housing/BAH-Rate-Lookup/). Enter your rank and ZIP code to see the current rate, and always confirm yours before signing a lease or making an offer.

For a sense of buying costs, the typical home value in St. Robert was about $204,000 in June 2026, according to [Zillow](https://www.zillow.com/home-values/86855/saint-robert-mo-65584/). That is a typical value, not a median sale price. As of the week of June 18, 2026, [Freddie Mac](https://www.freddiemac.com/pmms) reported the average 30-year fixed mortgage rate at 6.47 percent. Whether buying or renting makes more sense depends on how long you expect to be stationed here.

## Schools Near Fort Leonard Wood

The schools your children attend depend on where you live, and a few districts serve the Fort Leonard Wood area.

The [Waynesville R-VI School District](https://www.waynesville.k12.mo.us/page/about-the-school-district) serves Waynesville, St. Robert, and the post itself. The district reports that about 74 percent of its families are military-impacted, and it carries the Purple Star designation from the state for its support of military families, along with a Fort Leonard Wood school liaison, according to its [military family resources page](https://www.waynesville.k12.mo.us/domain/928).

Families in nearby towns may fall into other districts. The [Dixon R-1 School District](https://nces.ed.gov/ccd/districtsearch/district_detail.asp?Search=2&ID2=2910830&DistrictID=2910830&details=2) serves the Dixon area, and the larger [Rolla Public Schools](https://rolla31.org/) district serves Rolla to the east. Crocker, Richland, and Lebanon each have their own schools as well. Boundaries can shift, so confirm the assigned school for any specific address before you commit.

## Healthcare: General Leonard Wood Army Community Hospital

On-post medical care at Fort Leonard Wood is centered at [General Leonard Wood Army Community Hospital](https://leonard-wood.tricare.mil/), which provides [primary care](https://leonard-wood.tricare.mil/Health-Services/Primary-Care), specialty clinics, and [emergency services](https://leonard-wood.tricare.mil/Health-Services/Urgent-Emergency-Care) for eligible patients.

Your military health coverage runs through TRICARE, the health care program for service members and their families. Set up your plan early in your PCS. Update your information in DEERS, the Defense Enrollment Eligibility Reporting System, choose or transfer your plan, and request any referrals before you arrive so there is no gap in care. This is one of the easiest ways to reduce stress after you land.

## Climate and Things to Do

The Fort Leonard Wood area has four real seasons, typical of the Missouri Ozarks. Summers are warm and humid, and winters are cool with some snow and ice, as the [National Weather Service in Springfield](https://www.weather.gov/sgf/climate_records_normals) tracks across the region. Spring and fall are mild and often the prettiest times of year in the hills.

The payoff for living in the Ozarks is the scenery. The [Mark Twain National Forest](https://www.fs.usda.gov/r09/marktwain/recreation) surrounds much of the region and offers more than 750 miles of trails for hiking, biking, and horseback riding, plus streams for floating and fishing. State parks are within easy reach, too. [Meramec State Park](https://mostateparks.com/park/meramec-state-park), to the northeast, offers gentle floats on the Meramec River along with cave tours. For an outdoors-minded family, the area is hard to beat.
