# PCS to Fort Polk: A 2026 Guide for Military Families

If you have orders for a PCS to Fort Polk, welcome to west-central Louisiana. PCS stands for Permanent Change of Station, the military term for moving from one duty station to another. Fort Polk is the home of the Joint Readiness Training Center, or JRTC, one of the Army's premier combat training centers, where units rotate in to train for real-world missions. It is a busy permanent-duty station with a long history and a strong community. This 2026 guide is written for the soldiers, civilians, and families moving to the area to live and work.

You may also know this post by another name. From 2023 to 2025 it was called Fort Johnson, so if you have seen that name in older orders or articles, this is the same place. According to the post's [official history page](https://home.army.mil/polk/about/history), the installation was redesignated Fort Johnson on June 13, 2023, then renamed back to Fort Polk on June 17, 2025. The current name honors General James H. Polk, a World War II Silver Star recipient, not the original Confederate namesake.

A move is a lot to manage at once. Our goal is to make the Fort Polk part feel clearer. We will cover where to live, how housing pay works, schools, healthcare, the local climate, and a few things to do once you are settled.

## What and Where Is Fort Polk?

Fort Polk is a U.S. Army installation in Vernon Parish, in west-central Louisiana, next to the city of Leesville. According to the [U.S. Army Fort Polk home page](https://home.army.mil/polk/), the post is home to the Joint Readiness Training Center, the U.S. Army Garrison that runs day-to-day post operations, and a number of combat and support units.

The JRTC is the heart of the mission. As the [Fort Polk history page](https://home.army.mil/polk/about/history) explains, the training center moved to Fort Polk in 1993, and the area's role in preparing soldiers for war stretches back to the famous Louisiana Maneuvers of 1941. Today, units from across the Army come here to train in realistic conditions before they deploy. For families, that means a post with a clear purpose and a steady rhythm of training rotations.

## Where to Live When PCSing to Fort Polk

Many families who move to Fort Polk either live in on-post housing or settle in one of the surrounding towns. Your choice usually comes down to commute, schools, budget, and the feel you want. Permanent personnel may have access to on-post housing, so ask your sponsor and the housing office about current options and wait times.

*Approximate one-way drive times to Fort Polk. Times vary with traffic and which gate you use.*

### Leesville

Leesville sits right outside the post and is the closest off-post city, with a commute of about 10 minutes to the main gate. It is the most popular choice for Fort Polk families, with a mix of established homes, rentals, and shopping nearby. For many, the short drive and the on-post connection make it the easiest place to start.

### New Llano

New Llano is a small town just south of Leesville, also about 10 minutes from the main gate. It is quiet and practical, with a tight-knit feel and some of the shortest commutes you will find. Families who want simple and close often look here.

### Rosepine

Rosepine is a small community south of Leesville along U.S. Highway 171, roughly 15 minutes from the post. It has a rural, small-town feel and a well-regarded local school, which draws families who want a little more space without a long drive.

### Anacoco

Anacoco sits northwest of Leesville, about 15 minutes from the main gate. It is more rural and quiet, with room to spread out. Families who want country living close to the post often consider it.

### DeRidder

DeRidder is in Beauregard Parish, south of the post, about 30 minutes from the main gate. It is a larger town with more shopping, restaurants, and services. It is a good option if you want more amenities and do not mind a slightly longer commute.

### Alexandria and Pineville

Alexandria and the neighboring city of Pineville sit northeast of the post, about 50 to 60 minutes away. Together they form the largest hub in the region, with the widest range of housing, shopping, medical care, and an airport. The daily drive is the longest on this list, so it tends to work best for families whose schedules can absorb the commute.

If you have children, the towns above fall under different school systems, which we cover below.

## Fort Polk BAH and the Cost of Living

If you live off post, the military helps cover your housing through BAH, which stands for Basic Allowance for Housing. BAH is a monthly, tax-free payment. The amount depends on three things: your rank, whether you have dependents, and your duty station's Military Housing Area, or MHA. An MHA is the geographic zone the Defense Department uses to set local housing pay. Fort Polk falls within the Fort Polk, Louisiana Military Housing Area.

Because rates change each year and vary by rank and dependent status, we do not publish a rate table here. To find your exact figure, use the official DoD calculator: [travel.dod.mil BAH Rate Lookup](https://www.travel.dod.mil/Allowances/Basic-Allowance-for-Housing/BAH-Rate-Lookup/). Enter your rank and ZIP code to see the current rate. Exact BAH rates are verified separately, so always confirm yours before signing a lease or making an offer.

For a sense of buying costs, the typical home value in Leesville was about $165,000 in June 2026, according to [Zillow](https://www.zillow.com/home-values/12355/leesville-la/). That is a typical value, not a median sale price. As of the week of June 18, 2026, [Freddie Mac](https://www.freddiemac.com/pmms) reported the average 30-year fixed mortgage rate at 6.47 percent. Whether buying or renting makes more sense depends on how long you expect to be stationed here, so run the numbers for your own situation.

## Schools Near Fort Polk

The schools your children attend depend on where you live. Most of the Fort Polk area, including Leesville and the towns closest to the post, is served by the [Vernon Parish School Board](https://vpsb.us/about), the local public district. The district serves families both on and off post and offers support for military-connected students.

Families who settle in DeRidder fall under the Beauregard Parish School System, and families farther out near Alexandria fall under the Rapides Parish district. Boundaries and attendance zones can shift, so confirm the assigned school for any specific address before you commit.

## Healthcare: Bayne-Jones Army Community Hospital

On-post medical care at Fort Polk is centered at [Bayne-Jones Army Community Hospital](https://bayne-jones.tricare.mil/), which provides primary care, urgent and emergency care, and a range of other health services for eligible patients.

Your military health coverage runs through TRICARE, the health care program for service members and their families. Set up your TRICARE plan early in your PCS. Update your information in DEERS, the Defense Enrollment Eligibility Reporting System that confirms you and your family are eligible for benefits, then choose or transfer your plan and request any referrals through the hospital's [Appointments and Referrals](https://bayne-jones.tricare.mil/Getting-Care/Appointments-Referrals) page before you arrive so there is no gap in care. Getting this squared away early is one of the easiest ways to reduce stress after you land.

## Climate and Things to Do

Fort Polk has a humid subtropical climate, with hot, humid summers and mild winters. Heavy rain is common, and the region sits in the piney woods of west-central Louisiana, with some exposure to Gulf and tropical weather in the warmer months. The [National Weather Service in Lake Charles](https://www.weather.gov/lch/) covers Vernon Parish and keeps the local forecasts and records if you want to see what to expect before you arrive. In short, plan for green, leafy surroundings, warm seasons that run long, and the occasional heavy storm.

The payoff for that setting is the outdoors. [Kisatchie National Forest](https://www.fs.usda.gov/r08/kisatchie), the only national forest in Louisiana, covers more than 600,000 acres of piney woods and offers hiking, camping, and scenic drives within easy reach of the post. To the west, the [Toledo Bend Reservoir](https://srala-toledo.com/), managed by the Sabine River Authority, is one of the largest lakes in the South and a well-known spot for bass fishing and boating. About an hour to the northeast, the Alexandria area adds bigger-city dining, shopping, and events for a weekend trip. For a family that likes the outdoors, the Fort Polk area has a lot to offer.
