# PCS to Fort Riley: A 2026 Guide for Military Families

If you have orders for a PCS to Fort Riley, welcome to the Kansas Flint Hills. PCS stands for Permanent Change of Station, the military term for moving from one duty station to another. Fort Riley sits in northeast Kansas between Junction City and Manhattan, along Interstate 70, and it is the home of the 1st Infantry Division, known as "The Big Red One." This 2026 guide walks you through what to expect when you move here, including where to live, how housing pay works, schools, healthcare, and daily life on the prairie.

A move is a lot to manage at once. Our goal is to make the Fort Riley part feel clearer. We will cover where to live, how housing pay works, schools, healthcare, the local climate, and a few things to do once you are settled.

## What and Where Is Fort Riley?

Fort Riley is a U.S. Army post in the Central Flint Hills region of northeast Kansas. The main gate is at Exit 301 off Interstate 70, near Junction City, with Manhattan and Kansas State University a short drive to the east. The post is about one hour west of Topeka and about two and a half hours west of Kansas City.

According to [U.S. Army Fort Riley](https://home.army.mil/riley/about), the post is home to the 1st Infantry Division, the Army's oldest continuously serving division, along with U.S. Army Garrison Fort Riley, which runs day-to-day services for soldiers and families. The 1st Infantry Division has called Fort Riley home since the units cased and uncased their colors here over the years, and the post serves a community of more than 67,000 people, counting active-duty members, family members, civilian employees, and retirees. You can read more about the post and its units on the Fort Riley [history page](https://home.army.mil/riley/about/history). In plain terms, this is a large, busy Army community in the heart of the prairie.

## Where to Live When PCSing to Fort Riley

Many families who move to Fort Riley live in on-post housing, while others settle in one of the nearby Kansas towns. On-post housing may have wait lists, so ask your sponsor and the housing office about current options early. For off-post living, your choice usually comes down to commute, schools, and budget.

*Approximate one-way drive times to Fort Riley. Times vary with traffic and which gate you use.*

### Junction City

Junction City sits right next to the post and is the closest town to the main gate, often about 10 minutes away. It is the seat of Geary County and offers a mix of older neighborhoods near downtown and newer subdivisions on the edges of town. Many families pick Junction City for the short commute and the lower cost of living.

### Milford

Milford is a small town just northwest of Junction City, near Milford Lake, roughly 15 minutes from the main gate. It is a quieter, lake-oriented community with a small-town pace. Families who want easy access to the water and a little more space often look here.

### Ogden

Ogden is a small town between Fort Riley and Manhattan, usually about 15 minutes from the main gate. It tends to offer lower-cost housing than Manhattan and a short drive to post. It is a practical middle-ground choice for families watching their budget.

### Manhattan

Manhattan is the larger city east of the post, home to Kansas State University, and about 25 to 30 minutes from the main gate. It has more shopping, dining, and college-town energy, plus a wide range of neighborhoods. Families often look here for the amenities and the schools, with the trade of a slightly longer commute.

### Chapman

Chapman lies west of Junction City along I-70, about 20 minutes from the main gate. It is a small, rural community with a quiet feel and lower home prices. Weigh the longer drive against the small-town quiet and the extra value.

### Abilene

Abilene sits farther west along I-70, roughly 30 minutes from the main gate. It is a historic Kansas town with more home for the money and a slower pace. The commute is longer, so be honest with yourself about the drive before you choose it.

## Fort Riley BAH and the Cost of Living

If you live off post, the military helps cover your housing through BAH, which stands for Basic Allowance for Housing. BAH is a monthly, tax-free payment. The amount depends on three things: your rank, whether you have dependents, and your duty station's Military Housing Area, or MHA. An MHA is the geographic zone the Defense Department uses to set local housing pay. Fort Riley falls within the Fort Riley, Kansas Military Housing Area.

Because rates change each year and vary by rank and dependent status, we do not publish a rate table here. To find your exact figure, use the official DoD calculator: [travel.dod.mil BAH Rate Lookup](https://www.travel.dod.mil/Allowances/Basic-Allowance-for-Housing/BAH-Rate-Lookup/). Enter your rank and ZIP code to see the current rate. Exact BAH rates are verified separately, so always confirm yours before signing a lease or making an offer.

The Fort Riley area is a more affordable housing market than many duty stations, which is good news for families on a budget. The typical home value in Junction City was about $203,826 in June 2026, according to [Zillow](https://www.zillow.com/home-values/45976/junction-city-ks/). That is a typical value, not a median sale price. As of the week of June 18, 2026, [Freddie Mac](https://www.freddiemac.com/pmms) reported the average 30-year fixed mortgage rate at 6.47 percent. Whether buying or renting makes more sense depends on how long you expect to be stationed here, so run the numbers for your own situation.

## Schools Near Fort Riley

The schools your children attend depend on where you live. Two main districts serve the Fort Riley area.

[Geary County Schools USD 475](https://www.usd475.org/) serves Junction City, Fort Riley, Milford, and Grandview Plaza, and it operates the schools on post, including four elementary schools and Fort Riley Middle School. The district has a strong record of supporting military children and was the first in Kansas to take part in the Purple Star School Program, which recognizes schools that support military families. You can find help with enrollment, records, and school liaisons on the district's [military resources page](https://www.usd475.org/district-resources/military-resources). Families in Manhattan and Ogden fall under [Manhattan-Ogden USD 383](https://www.usd383.org/), which serves those two communities.

Boundaries and attendance zones can shift, so confirm the assigned school for any specific address before you commit.

## Healthcare: Irwin Army Community Hospital

On-post medical care for the Fort Riley community runs through [Irwin Army Community Hospital](https://irwin.tricare.mil/), which provides primary care, specialty care, and emergency services for eligible patients. The hospital is named for General Bernard Irwin, and despite the name it is located at Fort Riley, not at Fort Irwin in California. You can review services on the hospital's [Health Services](https://irwin.tricare.mil/Health-Services) page and find new-arrival steps on its [New Arrivals](https://irwin.tricare.mil/Patient-Resources/New-Arrivals) page.

Your military health coverage runs through TRICARE, the military health program. Set up your TRICARE plan early in your PCS. Update your information in DEERS, choose or transfer your plan, and request any referrals before you arrive so there is no gap in care. DEERS stands for the Defense Enrollment Eligibility Reporting System, the database that confirms who is eligible for military benefits. Getting this squared away early is one of the easiest ways to reduce stress after you land.

## Climate and Things to Do

Fort Riley has a continental Great Plains climate, with hot summers, cold winters, and big swings in between. The region also sits in an area known for severe weather, including thunderstorms, hail, and tornadoes in spring and early summer. The [National Weather Service office in Topeka](https://www.weather.gov/top/) issues forecasts, watches, and warnings for northeast Kansas, including the Fort Riley area. Learn the difference between a watch and a warning, sign up for local alerts, and know where to shelter before storm season arrives.

The payoff for the prairie setting is easy access to the outdoors. [Milford Lake and Milford State Park](https://ksoutdoors.com/State-Parks/Locations/Milford), just northwest of Junction City, sit on the largest reservoir in Kansas and offer boating, fishing, swimming, and camping. Near Manhattan, [Tuttle Creek State Park](https://ksoutdoors.com/State-Parks/Locations/Tuttle-Creek) has a large lake, cabins, trails, and a swim beach. For a quieter outing, [Konza Prairie](https://keep.konza.k-state.edu/visit/), a tallgrass prairie preserve in the Flint Hills owned by The Nature Conservancy and Kansas State University, has public hiking trails with wide views of the prairie and the Kansas River Valley. For a family that likes the water and the open land, this corner of Kansas has a lot to offer.
