# PCS to Fort Rucker: A 2026 Guide for Military Families in Southeast Alabama

If you have orders for a PCS to Fort Rucker, welcome to the Wiregrass. PCS stands for Permanent Change of Station, the military term for an official move from one duty station to another. Fort Rucker is the home of U.S. Army Aviation, tucked into the pine forests and farmland of southeast Alabama near Daleville, Enterprise, and Ozark. This 2026 guide covers where to live, how housing pay works, schools, healthcare, climate, and a few things to do once you are settled.

## What and Where Is Fort Rucker?

Fort Rucker is a U.S. Army installation in the Wiregrass region of southeast Alabama. According to the [Fort Rucker home page](https://home.army.mil/rucker/), the post covers about 63,000 acres, with most of the main cantonment in Dale County and the remaining acreage across Coffee, Geneva, and Houston counties. The terrain is rolling and mostly wooded.

Fort Rucker is the headquarters for U.S. Army Aviation and home of the [U.S. Army Aviation Center of Excellence](https://home.army.mil/rucker/), known as AVCOE. The AVCOE develops, coordinates, and deploys aviation operations, training, and doctrine. Nearly every Army helicopter pilot earns their wings here. The post also hosts tenant organizations that support the broader aviation mission.

### A note on the name

You may have heard the post called Fort Novosel. In 2023, Fort Rucker was renamed Fort Novosel to honor Medal of Honor recipient Chief Warrant Officer 4 Michael Novosel Sr., a highly decorated Army aviator and longtime Enterprise resident. In 2025, a second name change was directed under a federal law prohibiting DoD installations from bearing names connected to the Confederacy. The original Fort Rucker had honored Confederate Colonel Edmund Rucker. The post is now named for Army Captain Edward W. Rucker Jr., a World War I aviator who earned the Distinguished Service Cross. The redesignation ceremony took place at the U.S. Army Aviation Museum on July 17, 2025, and the Novosel name lives on in the post's Soldier Service Center. If you see "Fort Novosel" in older records, that is the same installation. The current official name is Fort Rucker.

## Where to Live When PCSing to Fort Rucker

Most families who move to Fort Rucker either live in on-post housing or settle in one of the small cities nearby. Your choice usually comes down to commute, schools, budget, and the feel you want. Ask your sponsor about on-post housing availability and wait times when you receive your orders.

### Daleville

Daleville is the closest off-post community, sitting just outside the main gate with a commute of about 10 minutes. It is a small, practical town where many Fort Rucker families land first. Housing tends to be affordable, the drive to work is short, and you are still close to the larger amenities in Enterprise.

### Ozark

Ozark is the Dale County seat, about 15 minutes from post. It has a classic small-town Alabama feel with a downtown square, local restaurants, and a range of housing options. Families who want a little more community texture without a long drive often look here.

### Enterprise

Enterprise is the largest city in the area and sits about 20 minutes from post. It offers the most in terms of shopping, dining, medical care, and schools. For many Fort Rucker families, Enterprise is the default choice for off-post living.

### New Brockton

New Brockton is a small town in Coffee County, roughly 20 minutes away. It is quieter and more rural, with a close-knit feel. Families who want space and do not mind a simpler setting often appreciate it.

### Dothan

Dothan is the largest metro in the region, about 35 minutes from the main gate. It offers the broadest range of housing, healthcare, shopping, and entertainment in southeast Alabama. The commute is longer, but Dothan works well for families who want access to a full-service city.

## Fort Rucker BAH and the Cost of Living

If you live off post, the military helps cover your housing through BAH, which stands for Basic Allowance for Housing. BAH is a monthly, tax-free payment based on your rank, dependent status, and your duty station's Military Housing Area, or MHA. Fort Rucker falls within its own named MHA.

Because rates change each year and vary by rank and dependent status, we do not publish a rate table here. To find your exact figure, use the official DoD BAH calculator at [travel.dod.mil BAH Rate Lookup](https://www.travel.dod.mil/Allowances/Basic-Allowance-for-Housing/BAH-Rate-Lookup/). Always confirm yours before signing a lease or making an offer.

For a sense of buying costs, the typical home value in Enterprise, Alabama was about $206,625 as of April 2026, according to [Zillow](https://www.zillow.com/home-values/38406/enterprise-al/). That is a typical value, not a median sale price. As of the week of June 18, 2026, [Freddie Mac](https://www.freddiemac.com/pmms) reported the average 30-year fixed mortgage rate at 6.47 percent. Whether buying or renting makes more sense depends on how long you expect to be stationed here.

## Schools Near Fort Rucker

The schools your children attend depend on where you live. Several districts serve the Fort Rucker area.

[Daleville City Schools](https://www.nces.ed.gov/ccd/districtsearch/district_detail.asp?Search=1&State=01&city=Daleville) serves students in Daleville. [Enterprise City Schools](https://www.nces.ed.gov/ccd/districtsearch/district_detail.asp?Search=1&State=01&city=Enterprise) serves the Enterprise area and is the largest district close to post. [Ozark City Schools](https://www.nces.ed.gov/ccd/districtsearch/district_detail.asp?Search=1&State=01&city=Ozark) covers Ozark, and families who live in unincorporated parts of Dale County may fall under Dale County Schools. If you settle in Dothan, you would be served by Houston County Schools or Dothan City Schools, depending on your address.

Boundaries can shift, so confirm the assigned school for any specific address before you commit. Your installation school liaison officer can also help you navigate options.

## Healthcare: Lyster Army Health Clinic

On-post medical care at Fort Rucker is centered at [Lyster Army Health Clinic](https://lyster.tricare.mil/), which provides primary care and a range of health services for eligible patients. The clinic is located at 301 Andrews Avenue on post and can be reached at 800-261-7193.

Update your information in DEERS, choose or transfer your plan, and request any referrals through the clinic's [Appointments and Referrals](https://lyster.tricare.mil/Getting-Care/Appointments-Referrals) page before you arrive so there is no gap in care.

## Climate and Things to Do

Fort Rucker and the Wiregrass have a humid subtropical climate. The [National Weather Service Mobile/Pensacola office](https://www.weather.gov/mob/) covers southeast Alabama, including the Fort Rucker area. Expect warm springs, summers with temperatures regularly in the 90s, a mild and short winter, and a genuine spring storm season. Severe thunderstorms and tornadoes are possible, so pay attention to emergency notification systems on post when you arrive.

The [U.S. Army Aviation Museum](https://home.army.mil/rucker/index.php/museum) on post houses more than 160 aircraft, including the world's largest collection of military helicopters. Admission is free, and it is open Monday through Friday and Saturday mornings.
