# PCS to NAS Corpus Christi: A 2026 Guide for Military Families in South Texas

If you have orders for a PCS to Naval Air Station Corpus Christi, welcome to the Texas Gulf Coast. PCS stands for Permanent Change of Station, the military term for a formal move from one duty station to another. NAS Corpus Christi is one of the Navy's busiest training installations, drawing naval aviators and support personnel from across the services. This 2026 guide is for the sailors, soldiers, civilians, and families making Corpus Christi home.

We will cover where to live, how housing pay works, schools, healthcare, the local climate, and what to do once you are settled.

## What and Where Is NAS Corpus Christi?

Naval Air Station Corpus Christi is a U.S. Navy installation on the south side of Corpus Christi, Texas, situated on a peninsula between Corpus Christi Bay and the Laguna Madre, just east of the Flour Bluff community.

The station is home to the [Chief of Naval Air Training (CNATRA)](https://www.cnatra.navy.mil/mission.asp), the command responsible for all naval flight training in the United States. CNATRA leads the Naval Air Training Command, composed of five training air wings. [Training Air Wing FOUR (TRAWING 4)](https://www.cnatra.navy.mil/tw4/), established in March 1972, is based at [NAS Corpus Christi](https://www.cnatra.navy.mil/tw4/nascc.asp). It operates training squadrons and the Flight Instructor Training Unit, which produces T-6B and T-44C instructor pilots for all squadrons on the station. NAS Corpus Christi falls under Commander, Navy Region Southeast, part of Commander, Navy Installations Command (CNIC).

Also on the installation is the [Corpus Christi Army Depot (CCAD)](https://www.ccad.army.mil/), the Army's only organic facility for rotary wing aircraft repair and overhaul. Established in 1961, CCAD is the largest rotary wing repair facility in the world. It serves the Army, Navy, Marine Corps, and Air Force, and provides training for Reserve, National Guard, active-duty, and allied military personnel. The pairing of naval flight training and Army aviation depot maintenance makes NAS Corpus Christi one of the most operationally diverse installations in the country.

## Where to Live When PCSing to NAS Corpus Christi

Most families choose from several communities along the Coastal Bend. Your decision usually comes down to commute, schools, and budget. On-base housing may also be available — ask your sponsor and the housing office about wait times.

*Approximate one-way drive times to NAS Corpus Christi. Times vary with traffic and which gate you use.*

### Flour Bluff

Flour Bluff is the community immediately adjacent to the station and offers the shortest off-base commutes, typically around 10 minutes. It is a practical, family-oriented neighborhood with a strong military presence. Many families choose Flour Bluff because of its proximity and because all schools in the [Flour Bluff Independent School District](https://flourbluffschools.net/) have earned the Purple Star Campus designation for supporting military-connected students.

### Corpus Christi

The broader city of Corpus Christi is about 15 minutes from the main gate and offers the widest range of housing, restaurants, and amenities in the area. Neighborhoods vary considerably in character and price, so touring with a local agent before committing to a specific block is worth the time.

### Portland

Portland sits north of Corpus Christi Bay, about 20 minutes from the station. It is a growing suburban community with newer construction and a quieter feel than the main city — a strong option for families who want space and a manageable commute.

### Ingleside

Ingleside is roughly 25 minutes from the station on the north side of the bay. It has a small-town feel, lower housing costs, and easy water access. Some service members prefer its calmer pace outside of Corpus Christi proper.

### Robstown

Robstown is about 25 minutes inland to the west and tends to offer more affordable housing than the coastal communities. A good fit for families who want more home for the dollar and do not mind a short highway drive.

### Aransas Pass

Aransas Pass, roughly 30 minutes from the station, is a working waterfront community where the Coastal Bend meets Aransas Bay. It draws families who want a laid-back Gulf Coast lifestyle with fishing and boating close by.

### Rockport

Rockport is about 40 minutes north. For active-duty families, the longer commute is the trade-off for a quieter small town with excellent bay fishing and a popular coastal setting.

## NAS Corpus Christi BAH and the Cost of Living

If you live off base, the military helps cover your housing through BAH, which stands for Basic Allowance for Housing. BAH is a monthly, tax-free payment. The amount depends on three things: your rank, whether you have dependents, and your duty station's Military Housing Area, or MHA. An MHA is the geographic zone the Department of Defense uses to set local housing pay. NAS Corpus Christi falls within the Corpus Christi, Texas Military Housing Area.

Because rates change each year and vary by rank and dependent status, we do not publish a rate table here. Use the official DoD calculator: [travel.dod.mil BAH Rate Lookup](https://www.travel.dod.mil/Allowances/Basic-Allowance-for-Housing/BAH-Rate-Lookup/). Enter your rank and ZIP code to see the current rate. Always confirm before signing a lease or making an offer.

For a sense of buying costs, the typical home value in Corpus Christi was about $219,000 in mid-2026, according to [Zillow](https://www.zillow.com/home-values/38025/corpus-christi-tx/). That is a typical value, not a median sale price. As of the week of June 18, 2026, [Freddie Mac](https://www.freddiemac.com/pmms) reported the average 30-year fixed mortgage rate at 6.47 percent. Whether buying or renting makes more sense depends on your timeline.

If you are using your VA loan, our guides on [what are the benefits of a VA loan](/blog/what-are-the-benefits-of-a-va-loan), [how a 0-down VA loan works](/blog/how-does-a-0-down-va-loan-work), and [2026 VA loan limits explained for military homebuyers](/blog/2026-va-loan-limits-explained-for-military-homebuyers) are a good starting point.

## Schools Near NAS Corpus Christi

The school district that serves your children depends on where you live. Three independent school districts cover the communities closest to the station.

[Flour Bluff Independent School District](https://flourbluffschools.net/) serves the Flour Bluff community adjacent to the station and is the most directly military-connected district in the area. All Flour Bluff ISD campuses carry the Purple Star Campus designation, which recognizes schools that provide dedicated resources and transition support for military families. The district includes Flour Bluff Early Childhood Education Center, Flour Bluff Primary, Intermediate, and Junior High schools, and Flour Bluff High School.

[Corpus Christi Independent School District](https://www.ccisd.us/) is the largest district in the region, serving families across much of the city with a broad range of programs.

[Tuloso-Midway Independent School District](https://www.tmisd.us/) covers the northwest Corpus Christi area and offers a smaller-district feel.

Attendance zones can shift, so confirm the assigned school for any specific address before you commit.

## Healthcare: Naval Health Clinic Corpus Christi

On-base medical care at NAS Corpus Christi is provided by [Naval Health Clinic Corpus Christi](https://corpuschristi.tricare.mil/), which offers primary care, specialty services, and appointments and referrals for eligible TRICARE beneficiaries. TRICARE is the health care program for active-duty service members, retirees, and their families.

Set up your TRICARE plan early. Update your information in DEERS, the Defense Enrollment Eligibility Reporting System, choose or transfer your plan, and request referrals before you arrive so there is no gap in care. You can review services and find contact details on the [Naval Health Clinic Corpus Christi website](https://corpuschristi.tricare.mil/).

## Climate and Things to Do

Corpus Christi has a Gulf Coast subtropical climate. Summers are long, hot, and humid, with high temperatures regularly in the 90s from June through September. Winters are mild and brief — temperatures below freezing are rare. The [National Weather Service Corpus Christi office](https://www.weather.gov/crp/localclimate) maintains climate normals and records if you want month-by-month averages before your move.

The Coastal Bend sits in the Atlantic hurricane belt. Hurricane season runs June 1 through November 30, with peak activity from late August through October. Families should understand local evacuation routes, know their zone, and keep a go-bag ready during the season. The NWS Corpus Christi office publishes hurricane preparedness resources in both English and Spanish at [weather.gov/crp](https://www.weather.gov/crp/).

When the weather cooperates — and it usually does — the Corpus Christi area has a great deal to offer outdoors. [Padre Island National Seashore](https://www.nps.gov/pais/index.htm), the longest undeveloped barrier island in the country, is just south of the station and offers miles of beach, fishing, birding, and primitive camping. It is one of the few places in the world where Kemp's ridley sea turtles nest annually. [Mustang Island State Park](https://tpwd.texas.gov/state-parks/mustang-island) adds camping, surfing, kayaking, and fishing a few minutes from the gate. The [Texas State Aquarium](https://www.texasstateaquarium.org/) on the Corpus Christi bayfront is one of the top aquariums in the state. And the [USS Lexington Museum on the Bay](https://usslexington.com/), a World War II aircraft carrier turned museum docked steps from the aquarium, offers self-guided tours with a direct connection to naval aviation history.
