There are four Army bases in Georgia that most families will ever get orders to: Fort Benning, Fort Stewart, Hunter Army Airfield and Fort Gordon. Two of those names may not match your paperwork, because both posts were renamed in 2023 and renamed again in 2025.
This guide covers every Army installation in the state, what each one does, the name changes, and what housing costs nearby. PCS stands for Permanent Change of Station, the military's term for an assigned move.

What Each Army Base in Georgia Does
Fort Benning
Fort Benning covers more than 182,000 acres along the Georgia-Alabama line next to Columbus, with about 12,000 of those acres across the Chattahoochee River in Alabama. It supports more than 120,000 active-duty troops, family members, reserve Soldiers, retirees and civilians every day, per the Fort Benning garrison.
Benning is the Army's Maneuver Center of Excellence, where the Infantry and Armor schools train together. It is also home to the 75th Ranger Regiment, the 1st Security Force Assistance Brigade and the Army Marksmanship Unit. Expect a lot of students on short tours, which keeps the rental market busy. Our Fort Benning PCS guide and our list of the best places to live near Fort Benning cover arrival and neighborhoods.
Fort Stewart
Fort Stewart, in Hinesville, is the home of the 3rd Infantry Division. Together with Hunter Army Airfield, it covers 288,000 acres and employs more than 25,500 people, including about 21,200 active-duty Soldiers. More than 10,200 people live on post, per the garrison's command data summary.
The garrison calls Stewart-Hunter the Army's premier power projection platform on the East Coast. In plain terms, it is built to load out a heavy division fast. The training land is huge, with drop zones, tank gunnery ranges and live-fire maneuver areas.
Hunter Army Airfield
Hunter Army Airfield sits inside the city of Savannah, northeast of Fort Stewart. It is run by the same garrison and hosts the 3rd Combat Aviation Brigade and other 3rd Infantry Division tenants, per the Hunter Army Airfield garrison page. Its runway is the reason Stewart-Hunter can move heavy equipment on a tight timeline.
Families assigned to Hunter often live in Savannah, Pooler or Richmond Hill rather than Hinesville. See our Fort Stewart and Hunter Army Airfield PCS guide.
Fort Gordon
Fort Gordon covers 56,000 acres outside Augusta. It is home to the U.S. Army Cyber Center of Excellence, which trains the Army's cyber, signal and electronic warfare Soldiers, per the post's Cyber Center of Excellence history page. Army Cyber Command also moved its headquarters here in 2020, per Army.mil.
That mix brings a lot of tech jobs and contractors to the Augusta area, which shapes the housing market. Our Fort Gordon PCS guide and our look at the best places to live near Fort Gordon go deeper.
Gillem Enclave
Fort Gillem in Forest Park closed as a full post under the 2005 Base Realignment and Closure round and became an enclave in 2011, with base support provided by Fort Gordon, per Army.mil. Some Army organizations still work there, but it is not a typical family duty station.
The Base Names That Changed Twice
Two Georgia posts changed names in 2023 and changed back in 2025.
Fort Benning became Fort Moore in May 2023. On March 3, 2025, the Secretary of Defense signed a memo restoring the name Fort Benning. The new namesake is Cpl. Fred G. Benning, a World War I Soldier who earned the Distinguished Service Cross in France in 1918, per Army.mil.
Fort Gordon became Fort Eisenhower in 2023. On June 10, 2025, the Army announced it would change the names of seven installations, including Fort Gordon. The post now honors Master Sgt. Gary I. Gordon, who received the Medal of Honor for the 1993 battle in Mogadishu, Somalia.
So the correct names today are Fort Benning and Fort Gordon. You may still see Fort Moore or Fort Eisenhower on older orders, websites and map apps. Same gates, same ZIP codes.
