What and Where Is Marine Corps Base Hawaii?
Marine Corps Base Hawaii is located at Kaneohe Bay on the windward, or northeastern, side of Oahu — distinct from the installations near Pearl Harbor and Honolulu on the leeward side. The windward coast is greener and wetter, sheltered by the Ko'olau mountain range.
According to the Marine Corps Base Hawaii website, the base mission is to provide middle-Pacific based, sustainable, and secure training and operational support to enable a stand-in and joint operating force in readiness — in short, an active base supporting Marine Corps and joint force readiness throughout the Indo-Pacific region.
The primary operational unit at MCBH is the 3d Marine Littoral Regiment, or 3d MLR, which includes the 3d Littoral Combat Team, the 3d Littoral Logistics Battalion, and the 3d Littoral Anti-Air Battalion — a force built for distributed maritime operations in island and coastal environments. Also at MCBH are Marine Aircraft Group 24, which operates helicopter and tiltrotor squadrons, and U.S. Marine Corps Forces, Pacific, the headquarters for all Marine forces in the Pacific. Navy tenant units include Helicopter Maritime Strike Squadron-37 and Fleet Logistics Support Squadron-51.

Where to Live When PCSing to MCB Hawaii
Most families at MCBH settle in the windward communities closest to the base. The windward side is quieter and less developed than the Honolulu side, which many families find to be an advantage. Your choice usually comes down to commute, budget, schools, and the pace of life you want. On-post housing is also available — ask your sponsor and the housing office about current inventory and wait times.
Approximate one-way drive times to MCBH. Times vary with traffic and which gate you use. The H-3 freeway and the Pali Highway are the two main routes to the leeward side.
Kaneohe
Kaneohe sits directly adjacent to the base, about 10 minutes from the main gate. It is the most common off-post choice for MCBH families, with a mix of older homes and newer developments and good access to shopping on Kamehameha Highway. For families who want a short commute and easy base access, Kaneohe is the practical first choice.
Kailua
Kailua is about 10 minutes from the base, just south of Kaneohe on the windward coast. It is one of the most sought-after towns on Oahu, and the prices reflect that. The community is walkable, Kailua Beach and Lanikai Beach are widely regarded as among the best in the state, and the small-town feel is genuinely appealing. Families who can manage the higher housing costs find Kailua hard to pass up.
Waimanalo
Waimanalo lies south of Kailua, roughly 20 minutes from the base. It has a rural, local feel with less commercial development than Kaneohe or Kailua. The stretch of beach along Waimanalo Bay is long and uncrowded. Housing tends to cost less than Kailua, and families who want more space and a quieter setting often look here.
Honolulu
Honolulu is roughly 25 to 30 minutes from the base via the H-3 freeway or the Pali Highway, longer during rush hour. Some families live there for the amenities and urban services. Parking and housing prices in metro Honolulu are high, and the daily commute can be significant. For most MCBH families, Honolulu is better as a weekend destination than a daily drive.

BAH and the Cost of Living
If you live off post, the military helps cover your housing through BAH, which stands for Basic Allowance for Housing. BAH is a monthly, tax-free payment. The amount depends on three things: your rank, whether you have dependents, and your duty station's Military Housing Area, or MHA. An MHA is the geographic zone the Department of Defense uses to set local housing pay. MCBH falls within the Oahu Military Housing Area, which covers the entire island.

Schools on windward Oahu fall under the Hawaii State Department of Education, a single statewide district. Hawaii has the highest number of military-dependent children per capita in the nation, and the department maintains a dedicated military families enrollment page.
Families near MCBH are generally served by the Kailua-Kalaheo Complex Area. Kailua-side schools include Kailua High School and Kalaheo High School, plus elementary schools such as Keolu Elementary, Ka'elepulu Elementary, and Enchanted Lake Elementary. On the Kaneohe side, King Intermediate and Castle High School serve most students.
