If you have orders to one of the Marine Corps bases in California, you might end up near the beach, in the desert, or high in the mountains. Two sit in the city of San Diego, one is on the coast next to Oceanside, two are in the Mojave Desert, and one is in the Sierra Nevada. Each has its own mission and its own BAH (Basic Allowance for Housing) rate. This guide walks through all six.

The Coastal Bases
Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton

It covers about 125,000 acres and has more than 17 miles of coastline, per Military OneSource's Camp Pendleton overview. More than 42,000 active duty personnel work here. The big units include I Marine Expeditionary Force (I MEF), the 1st Marine Division, and the 1st Marine Logistics Group.
Marine Corps Air Station (MCAS) Camp Pendleton is a separate command on the base. It is also called Munn Field and covers 410 acres, per the MCAS Camp Pendleton command page.
Families often look at Oceanside, Vista, Fallbrook, Temecula and Murrieta. For commute times, schools and housing, read our Camp Pendleton 2026 PCS guide.
MCAS Miramar
MCAS Miramar is in the city of San Diego. It supports the 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing and other tenants, per the MCAS Miramar About page. More than 15,000 service members and their families call it home. In March 2026 the air station reopened a renovated barracks building as part of a wider push to fix single Marines' housing, per DVIDS.
MCRD San Diego
Marine Corps Recruit Depot (MCRD) San Diego trains enlisted recruits from the Western Recruiting Region. It sits on just 506 acres next to San Diego International Airport, per Military OneSource's MCRD San Diego overview.
San Diego is one of the priciest housing markets in the country. See our breakdown of what San Diego BAH covers in 2026 and our list of military-friendly San Diego neighborhoods.

The Desert Bases
MCAGCC Twentynine Palms
The Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center (MCAGCC) in Twentynine Palms covers about 1,190 square miles of the Mojave Desert. It is the largest installation in the Marine Corps, per the Combat Center's own overview. Up to 45,000 Marines train here each year, and it is home to MAGTF (Marine Air-Ground Task Force) Training Command.
On-base family housing has 2,210 homes and apartments, managed by Liberty, per Military OneSource's Twentynine Palms housing page. Off base, families look at Twentynine Palms, Joshua Tree and Yucca Valley. Homes cost far less here than on the coast, and BAH is lower to match.
MCLB Barstow
Marine Corps Logistics Base (MCLB) Barstow sits on Interstate 15, halfway between Los Angeles and Las Vegas, per the MCLB Barstow About page. It has two main sites: Nebo, with the headquarters and housing, and the Yermo Annex, which handles storage and industrial work. The base is the second-largest employer in the Barstow area. Barstow shares a BAH area with the Army's Fort Irwin, so our Fort Irwin 2026 PCS guide is useful reading too.

The Marine Corps Mountain Warfare Training Center (MCMWTC) sits in Pickel Meadow on Highway 108, about 21 miles northwest of Bridgeport. Family housing is in Coleville, 24 miles north of the training center. At that elevation, plan for snow, a vehicle that handles winter roads, and cold-weather gear.
What BAH Covers Near California's Marine Corps Bases
BAH is a monthly, tax-free payment to help cover off-base housing. It depends on your pay grade, your duty ZIP code, and whether you have dependents. Here are 2026 rates from the DTMO BAH rate lookup. Each cell shows with dependents first, then without.
| Rate area | E-5 | E-7 | O-3 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Camp Pendleton (CA024) | $3,963 / $3,093 | $4,494 / $3,642 | $4,659 / $4,239 |
| San Diego: Miramar, MCRD (CA038) | $3,975 / $3,147 | $4,446 / $3,678 | $4,518 / $4,248 |
| Twentynine Palms (CA032) | $1,980 / $1,782 | $2,649 / $1,986 | $2,814 / $2,343 |
| Barstow and Fort Irwin (CA028) | $2,001 / $1,695 | $2,547 / $1,911 | $2,748 / $2,274 |
| Bridgeport (CA393) | $2,085 / $1,941 | $2,883 / $2,163 | $3,018 / $2,541 |

A few things stand out:
- Coastal BAH is about double desert BAH. An E-5 with dependents gets $3,963 at Camp Pendleton but $1,980 at Twentynine Palms.
- Miramar and MCRD San Diego share one rate area, CA038.
- Camp Pendleton has its own rate area, so your BAH there differs a little from San Diego.
BAH is set to cover typical rent and utilities. To see how your rate turns into a price range, read how much house you can afford on BAH. For this year's changes, see our post on 2026 BAH rates.

Use your VA loan. A VA loan is a home loan backed by the Department of Veterans Affairs. Per the VA's purchase loan page, you can buy with no down payment as long as the price is not higher than the home's appraised value. That matters a lot in San Diego County, where saving 20% down can take years.
Know the tax picture. California taxes active duty pay for residents. Starting with tax year 2025, the state lets eligible filers exclude up to $20,000 a year of military retired pay, per the Franchise Tax Board's Publication 1005. That rule runs through tax year 2029 and has income limits.
Check property tax help. For 2026, the basic disabled veterans' exemption is $180,671 of assessed value, and the low-income exemption is $271,009, per the Board of Equalization's 2026 letter. See our full guide to California veteran property tax exemptions.
