If you have orders for a PCS to Mountain Home Air Force Base, welcome to the high desert of southern Idaho. PCS stands for Permanent Change of Station, the military term for an official move from one duty station to another. Mountain Home AFB sits on the Snake River Plain, roughly 50 miles southeast of Boise, and is home to one of the Air Force's most combat-ready fighter wings. This 2027 guide is written for the airmen, families, and civilians making that move.
A PCS comes with a lot of moving parts. This guide covers what the base does, where people tend to live, how housing pay works, schools, healthcare, the local climate, and a few things to do once you are settled.
What and Where Is Mountain Home AFB?
Mountain Home Air Force Base is located in Elmore County, Idaho, about eight miles southwest of the city of Mountain Home and roughly 50 miles southeast of Boise. The base sits at the edge of the Snake River Plain, a broad high-desert plateau stretching across southern Idaho.
The host unit is the 366th Fighter Wing, nicknamed the Gunfighters. According to mountainhome.af.mil, the wing's mission is to develop and deploy combat-ready airmen, take care of Gunfighters, and protect and enhance base resources. The 366th FW flies the F-15E Strike Eagle, a dual-role aircraft capable of air-to-air and air-to-ground missions. The wing includes the 389th and 391st Fighter Squadrons, both F-15E equipped, plus a tenant unit from the Republic of Singapore. The Gunfighters have been the host wing at Mountain Home since 1972.

Mountain Home AFB BAH and the Cost of Living
If you live off base, the military helps cover your housing costs through BAH, which stands for Basic Allowance for Housing. BAH is a monthly, tax-free payment. The amount depends on three things: your rank, whether you have dependents, and your duty station's Military Housing Area, or MHA. An MHA is the geographic zone the Defense Department uses to set local housing pay rates. Mountain Home AFB falls within the Mountain Home AFB, Idaho Military Housing Area.
Because rates change each year and vary by rank and dependent status, we do not publish a rate table here. To find your exact figure, use the official DoD BAH calculator at travel.dod.mil BAH Rate Lookup. Enter your rank and ZIP code to see the current rate. Always confirm your rate before signing a lease or making an offer.
For a sense of buying costs, the typical home value in Mountain Home was about $363,873 in May 2026, according to Zillow. That is a typical value, not a median sale price. As of the week of June 18, 2026, Freddie Mac reported the average 30-year fixed mortgage rate at 6.47 percent. Whether buying or renting makes more sense depends on how long you expect to be stationed here, so run the numbers for your own situation.
