Air Force Bases in Florida: A Military Family PCS Guide

If you have orders to the Sunshine State, the first thing to sort out is which of the air force bases in Florida you are actually headed to. The state has four active-duty Air Force installations, one Air Force Reserve base, one Air National Guard base, and two installations that used to be Air Force and now belong to the Space Force. That last part confuses a lot of families. A PCS (Permanent Change of Station) move is hard enough without a base changing its name on you.

This guide lists each one, says who runs it and what it does, then gets to the part that decides your quality of life: where you will live and how Florida's insurance and tax rules change the math on buying. Air Force or Space Force? What Actually Changed

This is the single most common point of confusion, so here it is plainly.

On December 9, 2020, Patrick Air Force Base became Patrick Space Force Base, and Cape Canaveral Air Force Station became Cape Canaveral Space Force Station. In May 2021, the 45th Space Wing that ran both places was renamed Space Launch Delta 45.

Nothing physically moved. Same gates, same beaches, same commissary, same neighborhoods. Only the service that owns the installation changed.

What that means for your family:

• Older base guides and search results still say "Patrick AFB." Same place.
• Airmen still serve at both sites in joint and support roles. A Space Force sign on the gate does not mean the Air Force left.
• Housing allowance, schools, and commissary access work the same way. The military housing area did not change because the name did.

Base by Base: What Each Installation Does

Eglin Air Force Base

Eglin sits between Valparaiso, Niceville, and Fort Walton Beach in the Panhandle. The 96th Test Wing runs the base and tests air-delivered weapons, navigation systems, and guidance systems. Eglin is the Air Force's largest installation, covering roughly 464,000 acres of land plus enormous over-water test ranges.

Eglin is also crowded with tenants. The 33rd Fighter Wing trains F-35A pilots and maintainers. The 53rd Wing and the 350th Spectrum Warfare Wing are there, along with the Army's 7th Special Forces Group and 6th Ranger Training Battalion. Duke Field, an Eglin auxiliary field near Crestview, hosts the 919th Special Operations Wing of the Air Force Reserve.

Hurlburt Field

Hurlburt is about five miles west of Fort Walton Beach, right on the Gulf. It hosts the 1st Special Operations Wing and the headquarters of Air Force Special Operations Command, usually shortened to AFSOC. That is the major command that runs Air Force special operations worldwide.

Hurlburt began as Eglin's Field Nine and is named for 1st Lt. Donald W. Hurlburt, who died in a 1943 crash. Because it grew out of the Eglin complex, most families treat the two as one housing market.

Tyndall Air Force Base

Tyndall is on the coast just east of Panama City. The 325th Fighter Wing runs it under Air Combat Command.

Hurricane Michael flattened much of Tyndall in October 2018. The Air Force chose to rebuild rather than close it, and Tyndall is now the service's "Installation of the Future" project, with hardened, storm-rated construction replacing what was lost. The wing has transitioned to the F-35A Lightning II and is preparing for two more F-35 squadrons on top of the one it already has.

MacDill Air Force Base

MacDill sits on a peninsula in South Tampa. The 6th Air Refueling Wing is the host wing under Air Mobility Command. MacDill also hosts two joint headquarters, U.S. Central Command and U.S. Special Operations Command, plus dozens of mission partners.

Homestead Air Reserve Base

Homestead is about 25 miles south of Miami. The 482nd Fighter Wing of Air Force Reserve Command runs it and flies the F-16C. This is a Reserve installation, not an active-duty base, so the on-base support footprint is smaller than at Eglin or MacDill. Homestead was a full active-duty base until Hurricane Andrew destroyed it in 1992, then was rebuilt as a Reserve base.

Jacksonville Air National Guard Base

The 125th Fighter Wing of the Florida Air National Guard sits next to Jacksonville International Airport. It flies air defense missions and is converting to the F-35A. Like Homestead, it is a Guard installation with a different support structure than an active-duty base, and most members live in the area full time.

Housing Near the Air Force Bases in Florida

Start with your housing allowance, not with a house

BAH stands for Basic Allowance for Housing. It is the monthly amount the military pays you toward rent or a mortgage. Rates are set by military housing area, not by base, and they are published every January 1. For 2026, rates rose by an average of 4.2 percent across the country, though some markets went up more and a few went down.

Hurricane and flood insurance are two different bills

This is where Florida surprises out-of-state buyers. Plan for three separate things.

• A standard homeowners policy, which almost never covers flood damage.
• A hurricane or windstorm deductible, often a percentage of your home's insured value rather than a flat dollar amount.
• Flood insurance, if the home sits in a FEMA-designated Special Flood Hazard Area. Federal law makes flood coverage a mandatory purchase for a federally backed mortgage in those zones, and a VA loan is federally backed.

Get real quotes before you go under contract, not after. Ask for the flood zone and elevation certificate early. Ask whether the home has had a wind mitigation inspection, since a hip roof, impact windows, and roof straps can lower your premium.

The market has loosened. Citizens Property Insurance Corporation, the state-backed insurer of last resort, cut 2026 homeowners multiperil rates by an average of 8.8 percent, and its policy count fell from a peak of 1.41 million in October 2023 to roughly 274,000 by June 2026 as private carriers took business back. Rent first if your tour is short, if you are unsure about the commute, or if you are arriving mid-hurricane season with no time to inspect properly. Buy if you expect three years or more, you have a clear picture of insurance costs, and the numbers still work with your allowance.
