Welcome to the Space Coast. If you have orders for a PCS to Patrick Space Force Base, you are moving to one of the most distinctive installations in the U.S. military. PCS stands for Permanent Change of Station, the military term for a formal reassignment from one duty station to another. This 2026 guide covers what you need to know before you arrive: the base mission, where military families live, how housing pay works, schools, healthcare, and daily life on Florida's Atlantic coast.
What and Where Is Patrick Space Force Base?
Patrick Space Force Base sits on a barrier island on Florida's Atlantic coast, adjacent to Cocoa Beach in Brevard County, roughly 60 miles east of Orlando. Patrick SFB is home to Space Launch Delta 45, the U.S. Space Force unit responsible for the Eastern Range.
According to the official Space Launch Delta 45 About Us page, the Eastern Range is a 15-million-square-mile corridor of Atlantic airspace and ocean used for rocket launches from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station, just north of the base. SLD 45's mission is to ensure the safe and successful launch of both U.S. government and commercial payloads into orbit, coordinating range safety, tracking, and telemetry and preventing conflicts with air and sea traffic. In April 2026, SLD 45 supported NASA's Artemis II mission, the first crewed lunar-orbit flight of the program.
Patrick SFB is also home to the 920th Rescue Wing, Air Force Reserve Command's premier combat search and rescue, or CSAR, unit. The 920th operates HC-130J Combat King II aircraft and HH-60W Jolly Green helicopters and consists of more than 2,500 combat rescue airmen trained to locate and recover isolated personnel. It also regularly supports civilian search and rescue off Florida's coast.
Where to Live When PCSing to Patrick SFB
Most families moving to Patrick SFB live in on-post housing or settle in one of the surrounding Space Coast communities. Your choice usually comes down to commute, schools, budget, and how close you want to be to the beach. The Indian River Lagoon and barrier island geography shape road access, so some geographically short trips still run 20 or more minutes.

Approximate one-way drive times to Patrick SFB. Times vary with traffic and which gate you use.
Satellite Beach
Satellite Beach sits directly on the barrier island just south of the base, about 10 minutes to the main gate. It is quiet, family-friendly, and as close to beach-side as it gets without living on post.
Cocoa Beach
Cocoa Beach is the most recognized community near the base, sitting just north of Patrick SFB at roughly 10 minutes from the gate. It combines a year-round beach lifestyle with proximity to the installation, with options ranging from beachside condos to single-family homes.
Indian Harbour Beach
Indian Harbour Beach lies just south of Satellite Beach, also about 10 minutes from the gate. It has a calmer, residential character with beachfront and lagoon-side options, and a smaller tourism footprint than Cocoa Beach.
Melbourne
Melbourne is the largest city in Brevard County, about 20 minutes south of the base. It offers the widest range of housing, services, and retail on the Space Coast. It is a strong choice for families who want city amenities and can handle a slightly longer commute.
Cocoa
The city of Cocoa sits on the mainland about 20 minutes northwest of the base, across the Indian River Lagoon. It is older and more affordable than the barrier island communities, with convenient access to US-1 and I-95.
Rockledge
Rockledge borders Cocoa on the mainland, also roughly 20 minutes from the gate. Established neighborhoods, a growing restaurant scene, and access to the Viera corridor to the south make it a practical middle-ground option.
Merritt Island
Merritt Island lies between the barrier island and the mainland, about 25 minutes from Patrick SFB. It offers quiet lagoon-side living, older home prices, and proximity to Cape Canaveral and Kennedy Space Center.
Viera
Viera is a planned community southwest of Melbourne, about 25 minutes from the base. It has newer construction, well-regarded schools, and easy access to Interstate 95 — a good fit for families who want a suburban feel and newer amenities.
Patrick SFB BAH and the Cost of Living
If you live off post, the military helps cover your housing costs through BAH, which stands for Basic Allowance for Housing. BAH is a monthly, tax-free payment that depends on your rank, dependent status, and your duty station's Military Housing Area, or MHA.
Because rates change each year and vary by rank and dependent status, we do not publish a rate table here. Use the official DoD tool to find your figure: travel.dod.mil BAH Rate Lookup. Always confirm your rate before signing a lease or making an offer.
For a sense of buying costs, the typical home value in Melbourne was about $376,047 in mid-2026, according to Zillow. That is a typical value, not a median sale price. Values vary between the barrier island communities and the mainland, so Cocoa Beach and Satellite Beach will look different from Rockledge or Cocoa. As of the week of June 18, 2026, Freddie Mac reported the average 30-year fixed mortgage rate at 6.47 percent. Whether buying or renting makes more sense depends on your expected tour length.
